Your designer can work magic with colors, fonts and layout. But there's one thing they can't completely fix: a photo that's dark, blurry or taken in front of a pile of boxes. The quality of your posts starts the moment you pull out your phone.

The good news is you don't need a professional camera. The phone in your pocket is enough if you follow a few simple rules.

Why your photos matter so much

On social media, the photo is the first thing people see. Before the price, before the caption, before the logo. If the photo doesn't stop someone mid-scroll, nothing else matters.

Real photos of your business also build trust. A stock photo looks nice, but anyone can use it. A photo of your dish, your location, your team or your finished work tells the customer: this is real, this is what you'll get.

Lighting is everything

If you only remember one thing from this article, make it this: find good light.

  • Use natural light. Stand near a window or step outside. Daylight shows colors the way they really are.
  • Avoid direct midday sun. It creates harsh shadows and blows out the whites. Open shade, morning or late afternoon light works better.
  • Don't use your phone's flash for products or food. It flattens everything and leaves glare.
  • Be careful mixing light sources. A yellow lamp and a window at the same time give skin and food strange colors.

If your business runs at night, like a restaurant or a bar, find the best-lit corner and take a couple of test shots before the final photo.

Background, order and cleanliness

Look at what's behind whatever you're photographing. A mop in the corner, cables or boxes make you look less professional even if the product is excellent.

  1. Clear the background or use a plain wall.
  2. Wipe your phone's lens with a cloth. It sounds obvious, but a lens smudged with fingerprints makes everything blurry.
  3. Clean the product, the table or the work area.
  4. If you're showing a before and after, take both photos from the same spot and at the same angle.

Angles and framing that work

  • Food: from above for plates and full tables, or at plate level for burgers, desserts and drinks.
  • Products: straight on, with space around them.
  • Service work like nails, haircuts, remodels or landscaping: one close-up for detail and a wider shot for context.
  • People: at eye level, with the light in front of them, never backlit.

A tip every designer will thank you for: leave some breathing room. If the photo is cropped too tight, there's no space for the headline, the price or the logo. Turn on your camera's grid and don't push the subject against the edges.

Vertical, horizontal or both

If you don't know how it'll be used, take both. It costs you two seconds and gives your designer options.

How to send your photos to your designer

This is where a lot of quality gets lost without you noticing. When you send a photo over WhatsApp as a regular image, the app compresses it and it loses sharpness. To avoid that:

  • Send them as a document or file, not as a photo, or upload them to a shared Google Drive folder.
  • Send several shots of the same thing so the best one can be picked.
  • Add a line of context: what it is, the price if it applies and what you want it for.
  • Don't apply heavy filters before you send it. It's better for the designer to adjust it to your brand's visual style.

That last point matters: your colors, your fonts and your style should look the same across all your posts. We explain it in brand visual identity.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a high-end phone to take good photos?

No. Any recent phone takes photos that are good enough for social media if you pay attention to the lighting, the background and a clean lens.

Why do my photos look blurry when I send them over WhatsApp?

Because WhatsApp compresses images. Send them as a document or upload them to a shared folder to keep the quality.

Is it better to use photos from the internet or my own?

Your own photos build more trust because they show your real business. Photos from the internet can help as support, but they shouldn't be the main thing.
